The privileged position of English in Mozambique should not be underestimated. English has been spreading throughout society, as the most used, taught, and learned foreign language. This entry presents a discussion of the sociolinguistic situation of Mozambique, referring to the existing languages, highlighting the prestigious position occupied by Portuguese, and the unassailable role played by English in this ecology. Developments in the field of English language teaching are also mentioned. The entry presents photographs from Maputo City, illustrating the growing use, awareness, and visibility of English in the public space, and commercials showing how English words and neologisms are being used in everyday Mozambican Portuguese, revealing the creative, innovative, dynamic, and vibrant nature of language practices in this multilingual setting.
